The ashram was the first Gandhian ashram to be opened in Bali. It began in 1976 under the guidance of Ibu Gedong. One of the major activities of Ashram Gandhi is to fund the schooling of local village children who would not be able to attend school without that support. Donations are gratefully accepted, and details of how to do this can be found on their website. Visitors to Candi Dasa can stay at the ashram and/or attend their morning yoga classes.
