As you are ‘deeply interested in any *facts* which may effect the Balinese tourism economy and my impending trip.' Here's one. In January 2005, Bali had 19, 849 Australian visitors. In 2006, just 6775. That's a heck of an amount of economic suffering for the Balinese economy, people, and in a wider sense, Balinese and Indonesian politics.
My supposition-based personal opinion is that any political ructions arising out of offence given to cultural and political sensitivities which affect the average tourists' perceptions of Bali being a nice, a happy, and a safe place to visit are tragic. And incidentally, just might make your trip much less pleasant. In any case, I hope that it will be everything you wish for and that this crass incident (referring to the cartoon), not our discussion, will soon blow over.
