bringing friend to OZ

hi my hubby and i want to sponsor our friend to come to Perth for one Month. If anyone has done this approximately how long does it take for the visa to be processed? They said 6-8 weeks does this sound accurate? Also he was jailed about 8 yrs ago when he was younger for a few days for fighting....does anyone know what the chances are that he would be allowed to come having spent a few days in Jail there?
