I would suggest that you go to Macro and you can buy just about anything there - from books, pencils, to rice, fish, vegies etc.
I don't know how much you intended spending but I myself go out of Kuta up into the villages (we go near Candi Dasa) and help out families there. The orphanages do get quite a bit, as you read on here and I know there are some corrupt ones around for sure. If you were going to go to the orphanages, I would definitely take supplies, and not leave money. But the villages are very poor and children come running from everyhwere.
