If you were hoping to leave during the next two weeks...flights are heavily booked to BKK for the Chinese New Year. I know of a couple on their way to Australia who who are 'stuck' in Bangkok for 10 days because there are no seats to Melbourne and are on stand by.
This is what happened to us a couple of years ago... Our agent (ex) accidently issued tickets on stand by on our return leg from Phuket via Singapore to Melbourne with SIA (SIA said agents are not allowed to do this) and the flight was fully booked. The agent was duty bound to fullfill their side of the contract and we are were upgraded at the 11th hour to business class ( a very stressfull 2nd week of our holiday, so I know how your feeling) I guess we were lucky to even get there.
Put your foot down... they have a contract to get to there on the days they agreed. Go for the upgrade first but no seats are no seats. How do you feel about switching to other dates or airlines? I personally love Thai Airways because their seat pitch is 34" and plenty room for long legs and thats another consideration if they shove you on a Qantas or BA flight (it's only 31")'tell em' that's the reason why you booked with Thai and all part of your argument.
Let us know how you go on. Good Luck
