visiting some local nurseries, to see what will grow in your area & see what they have set up for displays, you may find what you are looking for.
Bamboo & Palms are a must & you can get lots of varieties to suit different climates in Australia. Asplenium( bird's nest ferns) & Dracaenas are also great for most warmer climates.
Statues & water features are also good & will blend with different styles of homes.
Bali Huts can really look out of place if you not careful. Have seen some absolutely dreadful backyards with Bali Huts( I almost feel sorry for the huts !!)
