The australian networks mainly run on dual band 900/1800 gsm but you can use triband and quad band phones here too. If your UK phone is not locked to a network provider in the uk or sim locked [as in you can put any other network's sim card in and still use the phone] then you should be able to use the phone in Australia or Bali. You may need to check with your provider in the UK.
Prepaid sim cards can be purchased in Australia for around $30 with anything from $10 -30 credit already on them.
In Bali sim cards are very cheap. I prefer Proxl myself.
