Sounds like you have done a lot for your other family, and as you say you must not make them to different from their friends and families. So maybe it is time to stop, and just do little things for them.
By the way we struck a trainee at Sydney airport once,she also was a smart one, took stuff of us that is usually waved through, not much just enough to be annoying. We always do declare wood etc. but she decided that it was suspect, NEVER had that happen before.
