Seriously I read that walking quickly makes them jump off you - haven't tested that yet - the last one that I ever let close to me bit me.
I too am an early morning walker 4.30 to 5 in summer here and my biggest pest is having a garbage (trash) truck in front and not being able to avoid the smells. I walk with an ugg boot( small fluffy dog) and she wards off all the nuisance dogs - she is very tough attached to a lead & my arm
