If you have a look at the Chemist in Australia before you go or at the NewsAgent at the Airport, you will find a product called "EarPlane". They are small rubber ear plugs which look a bit like a blue Xmas Tree and you put them in the childs, (and yours) ears before you take off and then again when the pilot says they are starting their decent. The EarPlanes cost about $11 a pair and it says on the packet that you only use them for one trip but my son and I have had ours for the past 7 years and have used them about 25 times and they still work perfectly. There is absolutely no pressure build up and no need to blow your nose etc. Those sorts of remedies are great for adults who can understand that the pain will stop when they try them but it is really difficult to explain to a child, especially when their ears are killing them. I don't know why the airlines don't keep them on hand for small children and babies as I have heard many a small child screaming on the decent and there is nothing for the poor mother to do but hold them.
Anyway, they are really great and should do the trick for you and your children.
