We have stayed at Park view Holiday Inn, right next to Orchard road very central location but liked Peninsular Excelsior for an even better location, close to MRT as Cally says, right next to a food hall... next to and below the hotel.
An easy walk to the river and the restaurants of boat harbour.
Nice too for river rides and that area is very close to China town. Taxis are plentiful and cheap.
There are more expensive hotels which are fabulous but if it is a short stopover then EP is fine.
I prefer one side to the other and can't remember which is which but they are both ok.
