sudden realization that many Aussies have just experienced. Guess what, we're not immune to the problems that the rest of the world has experienced for ever!
No, that's being facetious, but on a serious level, I DO think that a bit of the reactions has stemmed from the fact that we felt such a long way away from the action.
I suspect that many of the Aussies who travel to Bali have never been what you might call seasoned world travellers, or have any interest in becoming such.
When we were in London, where there was a bomb exactly 24 hours after my hubby had been at a police station. In a way I'm glad it happened, 'cos for us it was the first realization that this REALLY is how the rest of the world lives.
Personally I think we've got a choice, stay at home, and pray like hell that nothing will ever happen to you, till one day you'll wake up, and suddenly realize that you've wasted your whole life, and you're suddenly old, and have left it too late to fullfill your dreams.
OR, and this is a real risk, terrible things may happen to some, and things may go really really wrong..... take a chance and seize the day!
Neither of these philosophies are right, or wrong. You simply must do what is right for you. After all you're the one who has to live or die with the consequences, aren't you?
