This is the way I have come to feel about corruption. Up front i agree, of course it's wrong and no, we don't do it that way in Western Countries, Well sometimes but not so openly!!! Thing is we are not in a Western country are we?

There are two ways you can go. Get upset about it or not. I don't want to waste even 10 minutes of my holiday worrying about this. Once you're upset about this kind of stuff it can ruin an otherwise perfectly good day.

Take the customs guy as an example. You have too much alcohol coming back into, for example, Australia. You get caught. You have a choice of paying the duty or losing the booze. Now you are coming into Indonesia. You have too much booze. You have a choice of paying a bribe or loosing the alcohol. End result, the same.

OK it's not the way we do things in our country but it is the norm in Indonesia. Also if I was doing that job for the wages they do and have a family at home who like to go to school and eat etc. etc. how can I be sure I'd stay honest. Never been in their shoes. Can't be sure!!!

In any case a tourist making a fuss isn't going to change the big picture. Apparently SBY is working on corruption in these areas but until he has some success (and don't hold your breath) I reckon just chill out and get over it!!!!!
