If you are staying for several weeks you have many options for travel around the island but if you are there for only days it would be best to do shorter trips. Lombok is out as a one day trip. It would simply not be worth while.
Thry the link below for a lot of information about Bali. Look for the Forum Recommendation link in the left side column. It is a big file and will take a while to load fully but you will find general info about Bali and then a district by district summary of where to shop, eat, drink, what to do and see etc.
