Why don't you point out that they can have just as much fun if not more for much less money in Bali and that leaves a heap of money left for clothes and shoes etc. Believe me even if they are boys they will get into the shopping, mine are boys aged 5 and 7 and they loved shopping for sunglasses, various immitation name brand caps/shirts/shorts and watches and they also loved the sports shoes and scuff types we found in Ramayana in Denpasar. Lots of Spiderman stuff which was popular with them too. They also got heaps of playstation games and dvd's which they would never have had the oportunity to have at home. We actually go out PS2 over there.
There are heaps of activities to do as well, why don't you get them to do some research and lists some activies they would each like to do while in Bali and included estimated costs in Australian Dollars. Eg, Buggy Rides$...., Elephant Park $..... Waterbom Park $... and then do the same for activities on the Gold Coast and an estimate of other expenses and give a presentation to the family on their chosen holiday.
They may then realise the value of money in a trip to Bali. Then again I could be wrong!!! If nothing else it will teach them something about both places and a bit of maths homework as well.
Which ever they decide I'm sure you can make time for some life changing family moments.
As for the Media beat up over Bird Flu and the Terrorists that is another thing to research. We did before visiting in November with our Kids and honestly if you have to worry about all those things you would not go out your own front door. Bird Flu (although a different strain) was actually in Australia not all that long ago and as for the terrorists, Canadians/Americans and the English are being told to stay out of Australia because of Terrorist threats!
It is all a very personal choice on to go or not to go when these warnings are issued maybe after some research and some family discussion you may all come to an agreement.
Goo Luck and enjoy the holiday whatever you choose.
