you are right - if you have your phone set to roaming then you pay to send and receive phone calls (including any calls to your mailbox) and the rates are very high. What I have done previously is just use sms and not answered or made any calls (you have to remember to cancel all diverts to your mailbox as well). sms charges are quite cheap. However, it is probably easier and far cheaper to get a Bali sim card when you are there (only work if your phone is not locked to a particular carrier).
