In 2004 I invited my Balinese bfriend Komang to join me for some adventures in Thailand. We hung out in Bangkok and Phuket.
Surprises:
The look on his face when helping him fill out immigration card, I told him to check tourist for type of travel, he said "Tourist? I am a tourist" On the way out the airport, "where are all the motorbikes"? Everyone thinking he was Thai and talking with him. Him asking them to speak in English to him. Watching him trying to communicate in English with the Thai strugging to understand as most did not speak English as well as he. His enjoyment of visiting the Grand Palace taking the lead and wanting to follow the map and explaining things to me. Looking really scared when the taxi drivers suggested he go out with them to see the "night shows"
Being pulled over (on motor bike) by Thai police asking to see his license. Later saying he liked the police because they smiled at him and didn't ask for money.
Finding durian being sold by the truckload, picking out the best ones, and just like in Bali bringing a few extras back to hotel staff in Phuket. Making frinds with street vendors feeling loyal and not being able to walk by without eatting at their tables. After a few weeks there comments from staff at local store about his growing belly from enjoying to much Heinikken. This is good therapy for me. Thanks all for being here. Deb
