When my husband first arrived in Australia, he couldn't believe the roads, how clean etc. He freaked when he saw kids on skate boards, "What are they playing" he asked. But he also wondered where all the people were. He would sit on our driveway for hours and say he hasn't seen a person at all. He thought the Aussies were a bit rude. Balinese talk to anyone, as you all know, so while on the bus or train he would try and talk to someone or just say hello and they would pretty much ignore him. After living and working in Australia for eight years, we decided to move back to Bali last year as he was very homesick. We built a house in his families village and moved over with our two children. After nearly a year in Bali, he was ready to go back to Australia. He missed his good job and money and realised that life for our children, education wise, was better of in Australia, where you also have the advantages of medicare, super etc. We have a big Balinese community where we live so if he gets homesick now, he just rings the boys and they have a good old cook up of Balinese food and a chat. I don't regret living in Bali though, my children spent so much time with their grandparents and are now fluent in Balinese and Indonesian, and I now have a nice holiday house for our annual holidays.
