Community colleges usually run language classes. In Sydney, they do heaps of them and Indonesian upto level 2. After level 2 (one level per term), you will understand the structure, pronunciation and have a vocab of around 200 words. You can scrape by in a language with about 1000 if they're targetted. It is quite easy to learn 100 words per week on your own once you target the words you want to know.

Of course, as with everything, daily practice is mandatory or else you'll be struggling along for years without meaningful progress.
