shouldn't cost any extra as its included in your luggage allowance. We always travelled light on the way over and have never been charged extra for hubby's surfboard. They will usually have a separate 'cage' for larger items like these, so it won't necessary be travelling with your other luggage.
Travel insurance is a must - make sure you read fine print to ensure it suits your particular requirements. Your travel agent can provide at the time of ticketing.
Talk to your doctor about vaccinations - be careful as advice differs from one GP to another - depends on whether they have travelled much to Asia themselves or not. Musts are hep b and tetanus. It was a while ago that I had mine done, but the doc provided shots with all included - hope someone else can help with the name. Shots were taken for over two weeks before leaving. If your travelling to some remote areas/islands, malaria should be considered. We don't usually stray to far so have never bothered ourselves - besides prevention is the best cure. Take heaps of mossie repellant.
one last bit of advice - pleeaassseee don't use any illegal substances while over there. Hopefully the media has done some good and highlighted the dangers in other countries. You'll no doubt be offered a variety of stuff, both day and night on the streets. Its too easy to come across. Just say no and keep walking.
