But yes the four day lead in accomodation deal is usually cheaper than airfare only. I'd rock up at the cheapest hotel you can get a package deal for and just don't have a plan in mind. If you like it stay the 4 days if not, move on, nothing lost. You really can't help but trip over the surfer crown in Kuta and Legian.
My only concern would be carrying al your cash around. Small losmen or hotels don't always have safe boxes. If you loose all your cash while your at the beach, holiday wrecked!!
A few travellers cheques is one option although they are a pain in the bum at times. Alternatively go to one of the main banks in Kuta or Legian and rent a deposit box and keep some cash and a card, credit or debit in there while you set off into the proverbial sunset!!!!
You're going to have a ball. Oh and I think you are right with taking a phrase book. Lots of fun to be had learning a bit of the language. Give it away to one of the local boys on the beach when you go home.
