You are not naive at all. I was reading in tracks the other day that there are two types of travellers, The tourist- who goes to see a place, and the traveller- who goes to experience a place. By going with the flow I think you gain a better experience.

Depending on the airfare cost it may be a cheaper option to book one night when you get there and a few nights when you leave in a package. If the airfare only is cheaper then just go with airfare, catch a taxi from the airport and start looking around, down the back streets of Legian there heaps of cheaper hotels.

If you are looking for surf, friendly travellers, nice locals then you can't beat Nusa Lembonga. No need to book, plenty of accomodation. Places like Main Ski and Agus's are full of young surfers and heaps of the locals surf. You will have a ball, my friends son has just returned from 4 months in Bali doing just what you are thinking about.
