I know its not a Bali JBR but I thought I would share.
We have just been camping up on the banks of the Murray River, about 20km east of Echuca, on the Victoria, NSW border. We bush camp in the red gum forest.
The temperatures over the past week have been the hottest we have ever experienced up there and so very hot overnight. It was even too hot to sit near the campfire of a night. We didnt eat till about 10 each night.
Three couples, 3 dogs, 2 caravans and one tent (oh and shelters for porta loo and shower).
We spent a lot of time cooling off in the river and really didnt do much else than read and relax. (We did do some 'craft days' when Denise and I who both collect wine bottle corks, with writing set to to make our cork board mats. We split the cork length ways then stick the half corks on to place mat size boards, then varnish and varnish repeatedly. They look really nice and are useful for protecting the table from hot bowls or dishes. Our hobby also encourages us to buy and drink more red wine so we get more corks.)
We had a funny experience one day.
I heard a noise and looked across at Bob and saw 2 baby ducklings walking towards him. How did they get there? How did they get into camp without the dogs noticing? What the? Next another duckling appeared, how come, where from, then another. We held on to the dogs and tried to assist the ducklings down to the waters edge. More ducklings, hey, they were coming from above! We then found 9 in all and they were all coming from a nest up in a hollow in the red gum about 40 - 50 foot above us. It was obviously time to leave the nest. All ducklings survived the 40 foot drop and were able to waddle down to the waters edge then swim off. A parent appeared and called out to the babes and the family group met up in the river.
(Pacific Black Duck commonly nest in hollow tree stumps)
We were so pleased that the 6 of us were all there to see what happened as we wouldnt have believed it otherwise.
Raining ducks from the sky and it was before happy hour!
It was so hot on NYE and a total fire ban day so no campfire. The temperatures were in the mid forties and dropped to mid 30s throughout the night. Hard to sleep in a caravan!
The fridge struggled terribly in the caravan and we had to resort to buying ice each day when one of the group went into town.
(Bob and Denise have a new caravan and found that the fridge kept going out on gas (sounded like air in the pipes) and when they used the 12v, it didnt effect the battery at all, we'd have expected the fridge overnight would drain the car battery. Bob took the caravan into Echuca to the Electrolux fridge dealer and they found that there was a kink in the gas pipe and the 12v wasnt working either, but at least they fixed it on the spot, thats why the battery didnt go flat!)
We packed up early and came home yesterday rather than today as it was hot again yesterday and 40kph winds were predicted.
Gee it would be fun to tour around Bali in a caravan, imagine the looks! I expect one day there will be campervans for hire so you can drive yourself around!
Now I have the next week to enjoy some time with my favourite son, who is holidaying here from London, for 16 days.
