Editorial

Well, what a year that was.

2005 has been another up and down roller coaster ride on Bali. We had our highs and definitely we had our lows. Tourists flocked back to this island in unprecedented numbers and Bali again was on the cover of just about every Travel and Lifestyle magazine around the world and in the process, winning many tourism and reader polled awards all over the planet. That was all until the beginning of October when, as we all know, another terrorist attack hit the island with what seemed even greater ramifications than the previous and we appeared to be shunted back to zero again. But is that really the situation?

Tourists love Bali for a number of reasons and those reasons continue to be exactly the same today as at any time in the past. Readers of the Conde Nast publication, Traveler voted Bali the Best Island in 2005 for three main points: Range of Accommodation, Friendly People and Value for Money - and the ideal Weather was a close fourth. There are some spectacular villas and resorts on this island; some of the best in the world. The Balinese are famed for being friendly and open to visitors no matter what their race, creed or status. And a tourist can live like a king for two weeks for half the price of anywhere else on the planet while baking in the sun day in, day out. (Not that we've seen much of that recently.) Yes, there are still many reasons for tourists to come back.

Bali still remains a beautiful place to live and we (that's me and my girlfriend, Made W), just like most of you who live here, aren't interested in going anywhere else for the time being.

The situation right now is not doing any favours for anyone's bottom line or wallet engorging at present, but what we have right now could be referred to as Bali's Golden Days, in the future. It's a chance to reflect and to build for that future. We read with interest last week that the Indonesian government is planning to spend millions of dollars in public works next year around the country to stimulate the economy. It would be fantastic if some of that comes in our direction to fix the local road, power and general infrastructure issues facing this island.

That would be my New Year's wish.

Happy New Year 2006, friends and may this year be a new start to Peace, Health and Prosperity for all people on this planet.
