I can recommend you the MEKAR JAYA in Kuta, Jalan Benesari. Double room with fan, toilet and shower is about 60.000 Rp a night. In the morning you get sugared tea, banana jaffle and some fruits. It has a wide garden in the middle with huge old coconut palms and rooms all are with terrace or balcony. The guys there are friendly and helpful Balinese. Not far to the beach, not far to Jalan Legian and the "touristy Kuta" but the area around Jalan Benesari is rather quiet and full of relaxed people.
When you tell the cab driver at the airport MEKAR Jaya in Benesari Street they'll know the way.
Have a nice trip with your friends! It's not hard to live cheap in Bali, even in Kuta!
