Same for me. I used to hire a Mini Mal in Jalan Benesari next to the last Circle K before the beach for 20.000 Rp per day. Nowadays I'm the lucky owner of a 7.0 .... :-) The area around Benesari Street, Warung 96, WArung Wulan (that's what Colleen mentioned above I think) is the most peaceful, relaxed and well-priced area of Kuta! We always stayed there (7 times).
Hiring boards on the beach is about the same price. Depends on what beach area you are. Cheaper in front of Benesari Street and Poppies 2, more expensive in front of the Hard Rock Hotel or the other direction to Legian, I think.
