by not letting the card out of your sight, making sure you retain the bottom copy etc , it all helps . But I agree that the Approved Trader tag doesn't mean much if the staff are crooked :-(
I had this happen also, and only used the card once, at a little quilt place on the road to Ubud . After I got home there was a call from the bank asking if I had used my card in Uk and Europe, there was over $5000 booked up , but Visa was wonderful - the signatures were way different , and it was all refunded thank gawd .. only use my card at ATMs now
