I think most places would accept payment in $US, and if not there are so many money changers around that it would be easy to go change your money and come back with rupiah. If you do pay in $US remember that they will have to pay to convert to rupiah so allow a little extra to cover that. My one tip re changing money is to change in multiples of 100 so it is easier to know exactly how much you should be getting. What I do is take a little cash, and then the rest I just withdraw in rupiah from the ATM machines. There is a $A5 fee each withdrawal so take out enough to last for a couple of days.
