If you want to get really local head into Denpasar and ask your driver to take you to the Pasar Burung (bird/ pet market) on Jl Veteran. Go right to the back of the market and there is a temple (isn't there always) and to the left of the temple/ car park area is a market that sells all kinds of weird stuff including many stalls selling crystals and stones. This is right in Denpasar but almost no tourists go there and it's full of older Balinese guys all haggling over big rocks for their gaudy rings.
There are also a few antique shop/ stalls that have some seriously strange stuff stacked away in the gloom and dust and I enjoy cruising around just looking.
