I wanted to try surfing but didn't want to pay a fortune in case I was hopeless (or too old to last more than 15 minutes). I just paid one of the guys hiring surfboards to take me out for an hour. I paid 50.000 (the rate wasn't as high as now). I went a few times but gave him a good tip at the end because he was great. And I stood up and turned. Yeehah.
If you don't want the expense of lessons that's what I'd do. If the boys can surf I'm sure many of the beach guys would love to get paid for a few hours surfing. There are a lot of pretty responsible guys on Kuta/Legian beach. It's also as good idea as the rips can be bad there also.
