I would never hand over money. (although i did to our sponsor parents but i felt is was to reinburse them for the drinks etc they supplied us with)
It is a hard one!
I would do what you said and give a little extra like a tip etc (don't get me wrong) Too many people have been bitten with handing over money, thinking it is going to the right places but it didn't (we won't go there) but i wouldn't want my money(hard earnings) going on luxury items i would prefer it for necessity items. I get frustrated when i see them pleading poor for food but can afford luxury items like smokes etc ok i know it is nice to have treats and all but, I think they need to start helping themselves and making wise choices(as we sometimes have to do, eg; we want a luxury holiday we go without and save hard as i am sure we all do on this forum)
I know everyone has their own thoughts on this. These are just a few of mine. Don't get me wrong i give gifts and items to as many people as i can and i go just as much over weight going over there(I always love to help them) as i do coming home (I always use the excuse I am being good to the Bali economy) ;-)
