The worst rate you will get will be in Australia - so take Aus$ with you. It is no problem to change to Rp. in Bali.
The denpassar airport usually offers fairly poor rates.
On the streets always check there is No commission. If a moneychanger shows a brilliant rate there may well be a trick to it, such as a "commission" they don't tell you about, or short-changing.
I have found the "Kodak" shops to be honest and with good rates.
And remember your Credit Card will work in Bali just the same as back home - but they do have limits on the amount you can draw, which I cannot remember.
