Being a somewhat pragmatic soul I wouldn't usually pay too much attention to this other than it being a GREAT story. I can't say I've struck anything like this in Bali, but I do know that from the first moment of my first visit I've been acutely aware of the spirituality of the place (good and bad) and there have been a number of occasions when I simply could not go into a shop for example, because of a concrete-wall-like "darkness" around it, and on one occasion in the course of a pretty average conversation with someone something else seemed to come between and I couldn't get away fast enough. None of this involves any spirits of the bottled kind or any other exotic mind altering substance by the way! I recall reading somewhere that immediately after the 2002 tragedy many people say they saw hundreds of lights flickering between the trees in the Kuta area which ceased after the cleansing ceremony. I am pretty sure there are going to be some very interesting stories originating from your post.
