Just take AU $100 notes with a $50 for the day you leave in case you need more cash but don;t need a wholse $100 converted. I usually go the bank just before I go and get new/newer $100 notes and have had no trouble changing them. Don't change your cash before you go as the exchange is ridiculous. Plus if you need money there is a money changer at the airport who does good rates. Most hotels will have a security box that you can use, I put my tickets, passport and cash in there and just get money out as required. I take my key card as a back up in case I need extra $$ but don't like to rely on this as I would be worried if it got swallowed by the machine!
