Oct 18, 2005

SYDNEY Air Asia started it by giving away thousands of free tickets for travel to Bali and now Indonesias national carrier, Garuda, is set to adopt a similar strategy in a bid to restore confidence in the island following the October 1 restaurant bombings.Garuda is considering a plan to give away 5,000 return tickets to Bali in its key international markets, specifically Australia and Japan. The tickets are likely to be distributed through travel agents or through a lottery system although the airline and Bali tourism stakeholders are still working out details.Wholesalers in Australia continue to count the cost of the latest Bali bombings. Ian Norris, head of Sydney-based, Bali specialist, San Michele Travel, said new bookings for Bali were currently down 84 percent. In Bali, Pacific World managing director, Ida Bagus Lolec, said about 10 groups had cancelled to April 2006 three from the United States, two from UK, one from South Africa, and two from Australia, including one of 250 pax from Perth. He said two large conferences from the Asia-Pacific region were also reconsidering their choice of Bali as a venue.
