I posted this answer the other day to someone else with the same question. Bottom line is that there are so many simply lovely hotels in the Ubud area that require no deposit or prepayment at all. My communication with Tegal Sari staff about not paying for our entire stay nine months ahead of time was not very friendly on their part, and they were completely inflexible. That was enough to make us book elsewhere.
