So how do you know?

I've had alot of fun and learned quite abit reading the comments about Balinese and whether they are taking us for a ride or are genuine. Of course there are both types in every society, but being a country and culture that we haven't been born and bred into, I ask the question - how do you know if the friendship is real or not? I've had experiences of both, but would love some suggestions.
