Lani's did not have security. My husband was a lot like yours but once we were there and saw how very few people were in the restaurants we felt safe. Lani's may have had about five tables with people at breakfast time (8 - 9am). Very quiet. Zanzibar did not have security but we felt safe. The place only had a couple of tables with people. We said we wouldn't take the kids out of the hotel...but took them to Waterbom, to Discovery Mall, to Ubud, to Bata shoes in Kuta, to Geneva. to Tanyaya Restaurant in Kuta. We had early dinner with the kids about 5.30pm and had the kids back in the hotel about by 7 - 8.00pm. There really wasn't anyone on the streets. Tell hubby to go and have a good time and use his judgement once you are there you will know what I mean. Jayakarta was only at 40% capacity when we left on Tuesday.
Cheers.
