We went to Penang about 4years ago & regretted it. We booked te Holiday Inn from KL, arrived in Penang, our room wasn't ready, waited 2 hours for room, the room stunk,it seemed to have been steam cleaned but the whole room was damp, I complained to the reception & was told it was the only room available, I asked them to change the bed linen as it was damp to touch. the curtains & carpet were also damp. At dawn we were awoken by the calling of the faithful to church over a loud speaker, that happens several times a day. You could only eat at the hotel during the day as the smaller shops & restaurants were closed (I think we were unlucky) the hotels of course charged like a wounded bull. The only great thing was a little restaurant called Star of India, which we found opened at night & served the best indian food. Not much to see in Penang, we hired car & drove around everywhere, the original houses are great to see, the capitol Georgetown is crap. You can't or couldn't swim in the ocean when we were there, all in all a big let down & we wouldn't go there again.
