Was just browsing the forum and noticed your post. I went to Amed by motorbike and it takes about 2-3 hours from Ubud by way of Klungkung, Padangbai, and Karangsem. I had some friends who went to Amed and they paid about 300.000Rp, but that was before the gas hike. Make sure you secure the price before you get in the transport. My friend and driver Mario (Hp:08123955152) can help you out and he speaks good English. Tell him Nyoman Catherine recommended him to you. Enjoy your trip to Amed. Selamat Jalan
PS. Saw that someone posted they went by way of Singaraja. If you don't get car sick this is a nice trip but very, very long. Sidemen is beautiful, full of rice fields, and you can stop and purchase some endek weavings if you like. Another note is make sure you get a nice air conditioned ride in a Kijang and not one of those jeep looking vehicles. I call those the ride from Hell vehicles. HaHa
