Just returned from Bali about a week before the latest bombing. Had the greatest time ever and with out a doubt the best part of our trip were the two day we spent travelling about the interior of Bali with our driver PUTU.
He speaks well and what he does'nt know about the Bali culture and history is'nt worth knowing. He has a great sense of humour and is a good safe driver. PUTU is the only driver that i know of that will NOT take commission from stall holders, and will tell them so. Thus with no commission being paid out it will give you a better bartering power. If necessary PUTU will do the bartering for you if you are feeling a bit intimidated by it all. So when booking your next driver ask him what percentage he get from the stall holders. I think you would be shocked as to what percentage they get.
We would have no hesitation in returning to Bali in the very near future although I would plan my trip a little differently, mainly staying away from the tourist traps and getting out and seeing the real Bali. Once you are away from busy tourist areas you will then meet and see what bali is really about. There is more to Bali than the just shops in Kuta.
PUTU is more than earger to show you what the real Bali is about. If you are concerned about feeling safe, speak to PUTU and he will help you plan your trip.
He can be contacted via email: putu@arjunachariots.com or via his web site : www.arjunachariots.com
I can't recommend him highly enough, so if you want a trusted safe driver please contact PUTU. Please do not hesitate in contacting me if you require any more info.
