It depends where you are staying, we were in Tuban at The Peninsula Beach Resort and we could use it in our room in June, July we were at the Dewi Sri in Kuta and didn't bother taking it, no where to plug in there, this November we are at the Dynasty and won't bother as they have there own internet room. As for safety, locked in your safe in the room, or safety box at reception if fits will be fine. Locked in suitcase in room will probably be OK too, we used to leave our personal dvd player locked in the suitcase!
