a friend emailed this to me from Bali yesterday.
Speaking of which, get ready for some big price hikes next time you are in Bali by the way. Fuel went up 87% on the 1st of October. Almost everything is doubling in price already. I feel sorry for the locals here. They now have to find Rp 10,000 return on the bimo to get to the nearest market to buy food, and they work all day for Rp 25,000, if they work at all. I guess wages will have to go up too, but they are so desperate to work that they are still taking the same pay as before.
These same people have to also send their high school age kids to school on the bemo for Rp12,000 each per day, that's just the bemo, not the school fees. Obviously it doesn't add up so no more school for them. And of course food has become more expensive, they are still catching up, so everytime we buy food it has gone up again. I know it is the same in Australia, but at least there it is gradual. I wish the government didn't do it this way, holding the price down for ages and then being forced to do a big hike.
