Is a dried herb so yes it should be green, The 'tattoo' should be an orangy red colour NOT BLACK. I handle Henna regularly and make my own pastes. So look at the paste, is it a dirty green colour??? Then its probably okay. People do add essential oils and coffee to it sometimes to 'darken' the colour (effect are only temp) so SMELL it aswell. henna smells a lot like dried lawn clippings but you may smell coffee and clove or eucalytptus aswell.
