Real Tattoos: As the skin is penetrated there is always a chance for an infection.
So called "Henna Tattoos": Allergic reactions do happen quite often, even when real henna is used. In Bali they often use oil based colors which are toxic and can destroy the tissue. Ugly scars are the results.
If you want to stay safe you should stay away from tatoos altogether.
