It certainly is cause for a reality check when reading about the Balinese people you encountered on your trip.
I have taken my 9yr old son twice to Bali and often remind him of the children there who have so little and are just so grateful for anything they are given, and of the people who have so little to eat while he screws his nose up at food he does not particularly like. It can be ever so FRustrating!
We passed a group of children on one occassion who were having a wonderful time playing with an empty plastic drink bottle dangling off a 2 storey building by a piece of string. A far cry from a Nintendo or x-box which is such a must here in Aus for children.
I remind myself of all these encounters when I'm out shopping, especially now as Christmas is fast approaching!
We are so lucky to live here with all we have. I just hope the next generation are reminded of this from time to time.
