It's not just because its cheap as chips but it certainly adds to the attraction. In fact S.E. Asia in general falls in the category of cheap and cheerful.
As to supporting our wide brown land...yeah I will do more of that when I am old and grey and no longer feel i can hop on a jet plane to visit foreign lands and travel with ease... cheers :-)
