It threw a big wobbly in 1994 and killed 60 people. I bought some pictures of that eruption last year when I went for a sticky-beak. (I couldn't see anything, though, coz the mist was so thick we couldn't see twenty meters.) It's had a few overflows since then, too. About every three years it coughs up a bit of lava.

Which is probably why it's not one of the volcanoes you fly over on your way to landing at Yogya airport (plus, it's on the other side of Yogya to Bali). Most of those are either extinct or at least dormant. Depending on the clouds and the route, you usually see a couple of smoking craters about half-way there. A window-seat is a must for flying over Indonesia.
