Bali here, Jakarta there. 1200 kms apart.
They expect an attack on Jakarta because Noordin Top and his bomb-making buddy (whose name I forget) are rumoured to be hiding out just outside the capital, and someone somewhere tipped off the Indonesian intelligence dudes.
Since SBY has warned everyone, JI may put the attack off. On the other hand, they may do it as soon as possible before their stash of explosives is detected.
It's extremely unlikely that they'd risk driving their bombs all the way to Bali, especially since their van would most likely be searched on the ferry.
BUT... nobody really knows. If they did, Mr Top and the rest of JI would have been caught. Don't tell your ex that, though. Just show her the map.
I, on the other hand, am going to Jakarta in a couple of months. What do I tell my worried friends? There's 18 million people in Jakarta, and the bombs usually kill about a dozen. And in the last couple of incidents, only one wasn't Indonesian. I can live with those odds. More people die each year from choking on pen lids.
But you have to make your own decision (as well as the decision for your daughter).
(And before anyone says something stupid, Noordin Top is Malaysian, NOT Javanese.)
