Of course your stuff should be safe in the room safe and it's horrible to loose anything like that.

I also agree that most staff in Bali hotels valur their jobs too highly even to think of doing this. (no dole money in Bali). We've left small amounts of cash around many times with no loss.

However in any country where there is extreme poverty there is an increased risk of all kinds of theft. I wear my wedding ring only. Just don't think it's worth worrying about valuables when on holiday.

That's one reason I don't take valuable stuff but the other is that I feel theat people who have nearly nothing don't need shows of wealth thrust under their noses. It feels wrong if you think about it.

Sometimes you see tourist, usually men who keep their money in their pocket, pull out a huge fat wad of notes to pay somebody. This somebody may well be having problems making ends come anywhere close to meeting so how do they feel I wonder. Not to forget the obvious to anyone passing. You may as well wear a tshirt that says. "I have heaps of dosh. Please rob me. I won't even miss it."
